How to Make an Outdoor Water Fountain or Water Garden

http://www.allfreecrafts.com/gardening/water-fountain.shtmlpondWhat You Will Need:

If you are going to make a water fountain feature, you need the following elements:

  • a "bottom" where the pump where will be located and the water returns. This can be a large pot, an urn, a trough and so on.
  • a "top" from which the water will emerge. This can be a small pot, a fanciful creature such as a frog, a conch shell, etc.
  • a "middle" - the water course which will receive the water from the top and return it to the bottom. This can be pots, pebbles, shells, marbles, or even empty space, creating a freefall.
  • a pump
Maximum Gallons per Hour and Maximum Lift

Give crucial attention to two features of the pump: maximum gallons per hour (gph) and maximum lift. pond2 (25K)
The gph can vary from 35 gph for a small battery-operated tabletop unit to over 600 gph for large garden fountains. Choose one appropriate to the size of your water feature - more is not necessarily better. A low gph will give you a gurgling effect in the same fountain that a higher gph pump would provide a steady stream - or even splash. It's strictly a personal preference within the range recommended for the fountain size.
The maximum lift figure tells you how high you can expect your "little pump that could" to push the water. A small pump that has a lift of "up to 2 feet", for example would not be appropriate for your 3-foot wall mounted lion's head.
You will also want to consider the length of the electrical cord if applicable, and whether the unit has an on/off switch, if that's important to you. Remember, though, that water left sitting will stagnate.
Pump kits are available that include pump and tubing but tubing is quite inexpensive and can be purchased at most garden centers. You can make a water fountain from something as simple as terracotta pots and pebbles.

Water Garden

Materials:
• Wood
• Water sealant
• Plastic liner
•Water plants (Plants used in this how to: Japanese sweet flag, arrowhead, common duckweed, broadleaf, stonecrop, houseleek, deer fern, and blue-eyed grass.)
• Potting soil
• Pea gravel
• Gazing ball or other ornament
Tools:
• Handsaw or circular saw
• Hammer and nails
• Drill
• Wood screws, screwdriver
02.07.09_WaterGarden_02.jpg
Step by Step Instructions:
1. Get 1x8 - inch cedar boards. (You could use 1x10 or 1x12 boards to create a deeper pond.)
2. You will need 2 pieces that are 30-inches long for the sides and 2 pieces that are 15-inches long for the ends of the box.
02.07.09_WaterGarden_03.jpg
3. Assemble the outer frame with a hammer and some nails.
4. Measure the interior dimensions for the floor of the box. You can use the same 1x8-inch wood or you could get some 3/4-inch exterior plywood. Cut the wood with a hand saw or circular saw, or you could have it cut at your local hardware store. You want your cuts to be as straight as possible to minimize gapping.
5. Pre-drill holes every 6 inches along the edges of the box to attach the bottom piece. Start with attaching long side to the base first, then the two short sides, and finish with the remaining long side. Use wood screws to connect the boards.
6. If you want to create a divider, as illustrated in this project, for a separate planting box —cut another piece of wood that is the width of your interior. You can try it in a few different spots, before you decide on where you would like it. In this example one-third of the box is for plants and two thirds are for the water garden. When you are happy with the placement, attach the divider with the wood screws.
7. Use additional wood screws to fasten the end joints on all four corners. Screw them in as tight as possible to minimize gapping.
02.07.09_WaterGarden_04.jpg
8. Apply sealant to lengths of 1x2-inch stripes of wood and fasten them to each corner. They will strengthen the box and provide additional sealing.
02.07.09_WaterGarden_05.jpg
9. On the inside of the box, install a plastic liner or use a water sealant. If you are planning on having fish in your water garden, make sure that the sealant that you choose is safe for aquatic life.
10. If you are going to have a garden side in your box, you will need to drill two or three holes in the bottom to provide drainage.
11. You are now ready to create a composition with your plants. Try choosing some that vary in size, texture, and form. Choose a combination of edge, submerged, and floating plants. Select some that are taller and a couple trailing plants.
02.07.09_WaterGarden_06.jpg
12. Fill the garden side with potting soil and fill it with plants that have similar growing requirements.
13. If you are using floating plants in the water garden, place them on a brick, so they sit two inches below the water surface.
14. As a final touch you could add ornamental elements for visual interest. You could also paint the outside of your box for a different look.

  • While punching the holes in the sides of the can. With a sort of rusty awl. At which point my DH lost enthusiasm for the project.
  • We had a few questions about the steps, such as when the instructions call for 4 holes on the edge of the can, does that mean on the sides or at the edge of the bottom? (It’s the edges of the bottom.)
  • In our haste to get the beads and chimes tied on, we didn’t let the paint dry quite enough. So there’s a few spots that need touch up, and a shirt that needs washing.
  • Our favorite blue bead turned out to be a dud — no hole in one end, so no way to thread it. But hey, we used a clear bead instead, and I apologized to my son for questioning the veracity of his claim that he couldn’t thread the string through.
  • I had no idea that a clapper was any different than a big, heavy washer. Turns out it has a little “handle” at the top that you can string the thread through. No worries, we just added a bead, part of a toothpick, and some wire, and we ended up with about the same idea.

DIY Key Wind Chime

http://blog.krrb.com/2013/03/29/5-easy-pieces-handmade-and-upcycled-wind-chimes/
Prep It:
  • keys
  • chain (we got a roll of inexpensive chain at Michael’s) we used around 20 feet.
  • open jump rings
  • 1 large open jump ring
  • wood embroidery hoop
  • needle nose pliers
  • cutting pliers
  • DO IT!:
  • prep your chain: cut about 8 pieces of chain measuring around 2 feet – these will be the strands to which you’ll attach your keys. tip: we used an even amount of chain pieces around the circle so that the weight is balanced. then cut 3 pieces around 1 foot, these will be to hang your wind chime.
  • use the needle nose pliers to open one of your jump rings
  • put the open jump ring through one end of one of the 2 foot chain lengths
  • close the jump ring on the chain around the wood hoop
  • open another jump ring and put it through the key hole and attach it to the chain about 3 or 4 inches down from the hoop, by closing the jump ring around a link of the chain.
  • repeat step 5 with another key. use 3 or 4 keys on each chain, or more if you want! tip: you can mismatch where you place the keys on the chain for variety – we placed them a couple inches apart
  • when all of the key strands are complete, connect the 3 pieces of 1 foot chain to 3 spots on the wood hoop using jump rings like in step 4 tip: evenly spread these around for balance
  • once you have 3 strands of chain connected to the wooden hoop without keys, hold them up as if you are hanging them, and make sure they’re all exactly the same length then take the large jump ring, and link those 3 chains together and close the jump ring.
  • now it is ready to hang from a hook or nail or a piece of twine

Second Wind Chimes

http://rockthebike.com/second-wind-chimes/Think hammocks, sun tea, gardening, and sea breezes. Sleep in and wake up to the sound of your wind chimes in the breeze outside your bedroom. Daydream about sunny bike rides on a stormy day.
Handmade in our Berkeley workshop by inventor/craftsman Mike Cobb. Around the workshop, Cobb is known for his passionate recycling and reuse. He has been seen hack-sawing aerosol cans to separate the recyclable metal from the plastic nozzle. Prior to developing the ‘Second Wind’ chimes, he manufactured “Oyster Buckets” bike panniers and “Tube Saver” innertube-enclosed patch kits while running the green business he called Cobbworks in Olympia, Washington.
Mike personally selects and removes the valuable parts from bikes destined for landfills, transforming this trash into a beautiful item for your home. These hand-made chimes help you transform an ordinary afternoon into a relaxing excursion. Made from salvaged bicycle parts including cogs, chainrings, freewheel bodies, cranks, chains, and derailleur cables. No two are the same.
Offers a resonant-chime in medium breezes. Protected with a light coat of acryllic varnish, these chimes start out with a glossy shine, but are not weatherproof. They will develop a rusty patina over the years. However, as the various metals — cromoly steel, aluminum, and nickel-plated steel — take on the color of age, the stainless steel cables and brass hardware maintain their integrity.

Wine Bottle Wind Chime

http://www.sterlingwineonline.com/catalog/item/garden-accents/wine-bottle-wind-chimes.htm#image_1Wine Bottle Wind Chime
his unique Eco friendly gift will sing a toast to you with every breeze.

This bottle wind chime is made from a reclaimed wine bottle with a silver colored brass chain and a wooden knocker. The bottle is cut twice and then polished to smooth finish.

This recycled glass wind chime measures approximately 12-14 inches long by 4 inches wide plus a 5-7 inch hanging chain. This Wine Bottle Wind Chime is handmade in the USA. Since each piece of glass is as different as the bottles they come from, slight variations in size, sound and color are normal and to be expected.

This wind chime allows you to recycle and reuse wine bottles helping you save the environment one bottle at time.

I love how all these bottles are recycled and that they made something original out of nothing. I really want to learn how to make chimes like this and decorative pieces. I want to be able to use recycled  glass. I want to hang them off of my clay pots. They used really good colors here and they flow really well. Also the wiring is so well used in these pieces and the cold connections that were made. I also really love the see through and cold connection going down through the piece of clear glass.

Wind chimes

If a traveler ever makes it to San Juan De Oriente, Nicaragua they will immediately be drawn to the bright colored bells hanging along the streets. The wind chimes are all hand made by the artisans in this area. They are hand cast, strung and painted. The bright colors are vibrant like the jungle. High Mountain Hoopla has imported and carried these bells in our own retail store for the last four years. The artisans are now our friends and suppliers. They are not the easiest item to order and bring into the country so we recommend taking advantage of this opportunity to buy while you can. Though they are ceramic they are very weather and wind resistant due to their weight. The colors come in natural, lime and dark green, light and dark blue, red, pink, white, yellow and multi color. The tops and come in variety of shapes as well. These are circle, u-shaped, heart, and s-shaped. We can not promise to have every color in every shape at any given time. The lengths and size of bell come in three different sizes of small, medium and large. You will not find these wind chimes anywhere else in the states. They are truly unique

Guanacaste- Nicoya Heritage

Between the peroid of 500-1000 A.D. the tribal villages of the Guanacaste- Nicoya where abundent in this region. This is also the period that many of the ceramic styles and techniques where forged.

How to make hard drive wind chimes ::: Windell

http://www.evilmadscientist.com/2006/how-to-make-hard-drive-wind-chimes/windchimesHardDriveWindchimes - 10.jpg
hard drive wind chimes. I used to disassemble hard drives, whenever possible, both to extract the magnets and to see how the different types worked. Different hard drives contain all kinds of wonderful components: voice coil motors, stepper motors, exotic bearings, electropolished machined parts, chemically etched metal webs, flexible circuitry, and my personal favorite: optical quadrature encoders for pivot arm position readout. The drive platters themselves are also quite remarkable: precisely made aluminum patters with a surface not unlike recording tape. The disks make a lovely clear note if you strike them, so it was only natural to make them into a set of wind chimes.
