This piece of work is by sculpture, Tom Holmes, who currently resides in Greeley, Pennsylvania. The name of the piece is Star Burst. He is one of the twenty- two artists installed large outdoor works around Stowe, Vermont, as part of Exposed. This piece was placed at the Helen Day Art Center, who hosted an outdoor public art and sculpture exhibition called Exposed in Stowe, Vermont. It was installed throughout the town and eleven additional artists who worked in text or performance. The exhibition took place July 8^th to October 8^th, 2001. Kasini House released a full- color, 66 page book that featured work by each of the Exposed artists as well as critical writing about the exhibition.

                He used various long thin scrap when he was in his mid- twenties and was just beginning to create art. His original degree was in music. This piece measured about 30” in diameter. The large start bursts are a progression of wanting to test the limits of the wood materials that could be hand built without help. He is said to have learned something new about the structure and stability every time he built one and how the weather affects his artworks.

                These pieces are asymmetrical. They flow from the middle outwards and are almost delicate looking. It is simple yet bold in it color choice. It looks dramatic in how the piece itself looks to be burst, exploding, and stretching itself out as far as possible. It’s a very organic shape. The saturation of the red is very bright. Also the negative space into between the multiple bursts of wood help you to look at the object as a whole and not just focus on one line of wood. It speaks a lot for itself with the color and layout. I loved how different it was and the fact Holmes used to weather to construct and influence a lot of his pieces.

CRITICAL MASS, DE LA WARR PAVILION, BEXHILL-ON-SEA, UK, 2010

   These works of art are by Antony Gormley. This piece was created in 1995 for a railway depot in Vienna. This is said to be one of Gormley's best known works. It is made up of 60 life- sized cast iron body forms. It is displayed on the roof of the De La Warr Pavilion. One quote from the artist was, "This is the return of the lost subject to the site of Modernism. It is great to have a chance to test this piece of sculpture against the clarity of Mendelsohn and Chemayeff's English masterpiece. I am excited to see these dark forms in the elements against the sea and in direct light. It will be like a sky burial. How these masses act in space is very important. The challenge is to make the distance intimate, internal." 

This piece is made up of 5 different casts from 12 discrete moulds of Gormley's body, developing from a low crouching position to squatting, sitting, kneeling, and standing- representing the man figure, ranging through the different motion and different principles of the body. 

I choose this body of artwork because it caught my interest. I love the materials used, I cannot imagine how hard it must have been to use cast iron and how hard it must have been getting those moulds just right. The space between the figures is important to making you want to go from one to the other and look at all of them. They are simple body figures. The iron looks thick and smooth. They are simplistic but have many curves and are all elongated figures. This is a dramatic statement to me. I think using iron is dramatic and some of the body positions are dramatic as well. These are large figures, some being symmetrical and some being a symmetrical. It really opens my mind up to the type of work I could make for outside.
